Last time I got the chance to hang out with [personal profile] raven, about a year ago -- there would have been another time recently but, alas!, airline crimes interfered -- I ended up with two books shoved into my hands: Mavis Doriel Hay's Murder Underground and Death on the Cherwell.

I was not particularly familiar with Hay's game before this; she falls squarely in the Golden Age but only ever published three novels before focusing all her attention on Rural British Handicrafts. [personal profile] raven is right however that these books are both very fun and worthy of attention for their structure: neither of them have a kind of traditional primary detective figure, and both of them instead focus on a group of people in the murder victim's broader community who sort of collectively solve the crime by bouncing against each other in various directions until the right information comes to light.

In Murder Underground, the unloved landlady of a boarding house is found murdered on the subway, and her Bertie Wooster of a nephew promptly bumbles his way all over the crime scene and makes himself prime suspect number one (Dorothy Sayers, in her review, called this man one of the most feckless, exasperating and lifelike literary men that ever confused a trail and I couldn't put it better! god bless!) We spend a good chunk of the book following the Feckless Nephew and another good chunk just hanging out with the people who live in the boarding house, all of whom have Opinions, Mostly Incorrect.

Death on the Cherwell has some returning characters from Murder Underground but mostly focuses on a group of Young Lady Students who have been having an inaugural meeting for their we-hate-and-curse-our-bursar club when they happen to see said bursar floating down the river in a boat, presumably pre-cursed because she's very obviously dead. The police detective on the case has more to do in this one but the charm of the book is all in the Young Lady Students bopping around trying to investigate on their own, annoying various of their friends and relations in the process.

Hay has also written a third book that I've not yet read and I'm curious to see if it leans as much as these two into the ensemble and the way that a whole community can become stakeholders in A Murder Problem. In the meantime, [personal profile] raven has encouraged me to pass these along to another good home if anyone else would like them! ETA and they are CLAIMED

(As always when reading Golden Age mysteries one is inevitably going to run into some classic Golden Age racism, and in this case it would be remiss of me not to mention that Death on the Cherwell has some opinions about Eastern Europe ... ah, those excitable Yugoslavians! A Yugoslavian Young Lady Student MIGHT declare blood feud against one of her admins. Who Could Say. We Just Don't Know.)

Bringing the list up to date for the year:

FutureLearn

Exploring Scottish Catholicism: Education, Philosophy and Literature (University of Glasgow)
It was interesting to see some of the contribution Catholicism had made, but with only one week per subject this really was a very quick look at the three topics.

The Forbidden City and its People (University of Stirling and Palace Museum)
The forbidden city has a lot of interesting artefacts, and was the centre of government for both the Ming and Qing dynasties, with many notable emperors during that time.  But somehow the course seemed to be mostly a series of pictures, and a confusing list of emperors, and more something simply to be looked at.

OpenLearn

Intermediate German: Understanding Spoken German
The German level was above what I am capable of, although I could understand some of what was said.  But much of the vocabulary is not relevant to my needs - there was a lot of sport, which isn't one of my interests.

Understanding Dyslexia
This was another 8 week badged course.  The first four weeks were very interesting, the second four less so, as they seemed to be extended simply to qualify as an 8 week course.  I passed the test, so earned my badge!

In total this year I have completed 18 FutureLearn courses and 47 OpenLearn courses.  The latter is a reflection on my intention of reducing the number of courses on my wish list, and I was successful in completing everything I had at the beginning of the week.  Looking forward, I am partway through one FutureLearn course, being on week 2 of a 5 week course.  And I have 5 courses recently added to my OpenLearn wish list, which I shall be starting in the new year.  I shall also be continuing my German.

Povitica - noun.

Povitica (pronounced "poh-vee-TEET-sah" in Croatian, or "poh-TEET-sah" as potica in Slovenian) is a traditional Eastern European sweet or savory nut roll bread characterized by a very thin, yeast-raised dough.

A rich filling, usually finely ground walnuts, honey and/or sugar, is spread inside and then rolled into a tight spiral. Learn how to make it yourself below:

kalloway: multicolored christmas lights (Xmas Lights 26 Unspun)
[personal profile] kalloway
The month has certainly gotten away from me- what do you mean Christmas is in a few days?

Thank you to everyone who has sent cards! I have, embarrassingly, completely lost track of things. ^^;; But I have also sent a lot of things... and would feel good about the state of my gifting overall except I have one amazon order from the beginning of the month that hasn't budged!. I suspect next year I will either need to pester people for wishlists at the beginning of November or see if we can skip the 'zon altogether. (Also a few packages out in the void but that's starting to clear up and that's certainly the weather affecting things at this point.)

I have one more day of work left this year, and then nearly two weeks off. I suppose the main thing I need to do is clean/sort/organize. Yet again, not having any clue what I own threatened to bite me in the ass. (Saved! ...by my laziness. I hadn't actually bought the thing I thought I needed but already had.) So, 2026 will be the year of the whole-place inventory and likely clean-out. Maybe I can just start doing a monthly giveaway post?

Finished up RG Exia and put him in the Mangar. Next is a 30MM Horse, which is part of the D&D party that I ordered at Thanksgiving: RG Justice, HG Calibarn, SD Dynames, 30MF Priest, and 30MM Horse. I didn't order a D&D party on purpose! Just... once everyone was in my cart I was just 'lol, this sure is an assortment, or more like a D&D party...'

Neighbor D's memorial service is also today. It's fairly late in the day, so I'm just going to drop by briefly, but I also wouldn't miss it.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Life Update

Because I talked about this on Discord, but not here: Dad broke his ankle last Friday 😬 After slipping on some ice, he initially thought it was a sprain, but Mom talked him into visiting Urgent Care where they got the correct diagnosis. On Monday, I took him to the hospital for an update, where they said that on this coming Tuesday, they'll need to surgically put a pin in the broken bone. After that, he'll be in a cast or boot for about six weeks.

Since Dad also has some Santa Claus gigs, he's been going in his boot and, at Mom's suggestion, telling people that Dancer stepped on his foot while trying out some new moves. I took him to a couple of Santa gigs today, where he was very well received; his final gig of the year is tomorrow afternoon, and then after that he's done being Santa for the year (and his leg should be better well before next December 😛)

In other news, I'm not really on the Book of Faces, but I have been communicating a bit more with the aunt I went to visit last March. I told her that I went back to school and expected to graduate this semester, and she apparently spread the news herself, because today I got a congratulatory card from a different aunt—with a check in it 😮 I've already got a thank-you note for her written and waiting in the mail box, though I don't know if I'll have the chance to deposit the check before Monday; I've got work tomorrow and Sunday.

I think that's about it for now; will blog more later ✌

COUNTDOWN TO REVEALS

Treats

Treats in both the Madness and Main Yuletide collections are enthusiastically welcomed. You can post a treat for someone in the main collection up until 9pm UTC 24 December, and in the Madness collection up until 9pm UTC 25 December. There's more information about posting treats here. If you're hunting for inspiration, see also the mini-challenges tag at [community profile] yuletide, and of course, please consider treats for pinch hitters.

Pinch hits

We’re still looking for intrepid writers to take on post-deadline pinch hits. As of this post, we need writers for:

PH #184: Aveyond (Video Games), Quasimorph (Video Game), Geneforge

PH #198: even if TEMPEST 宵闇にかく語りき魔女 (Visual Novel), Flowers Series (Visual Novels), Lkyt. (Visual Novel)

As well as offers from writers, we're keen to hear (yuletideadmin@gmail.com) from anyone with tips on how to consume or review details of these canons!

Please look at our outstanding pinch hit details, and help if you can!

Beta requests

Can you help out a fellow writer by beta-reading their work? Please check the hippo-want-ads at the Discord server, or email mods if you can help with one of the following requests and we’ll get you in touch.
As of this post, beta readers are needed for the following requests (click/expand to view):
1.2K T-rated Mayor of Kingstown
15k+ E-rated Damien/Gerald Coldfire Trilogy
7k Batman Wayne Family Adventures
Racepicker and sensitivity reader for a 10k fic featuring a young Black English girl
4.7k slang and other dialogue choices right for a Gen Z Black Londoner, Rivers of London
13k Lunar Chronicles
2.8k fic for The Odd Couple (TV 1970)
4k Nicked by M.T. Anderson

We also have some less time-sensitive beta requests in the server's betas-wanted channel:
WH40k
The Witcher III/Chronicles of Narnia
The Stakeout from Inside No. 9
Daria (Cartoon)

Meanwhile, please check your work

  • Please check that you uploaded the right draft. Mistakes can happen to anyone, but checking that everything looks right is a crucial part of posting. Make sure your work has a title and that the summary doesn't say "tbd". Please check that all the text is there and you didn't post the version with [name?] and [thing goes here] notes. Any uploaded version must be a complete story that is readable as it is, even if you're still making edits between now and reveals. Please don't risk disappointing your recipient or requiring mods to seek a back-up pinch hit.

  • Please check that all required characters feature in the work. This is likely to mean all the characters your recipient tagged, not just the ones they wrote prompts for. Or, if they selected Any, a character from the tag set. They may have selected additional tags that give further guidance about which characters to include - please check that too. If your recipient selected Worldbuilding and you're not sure there's enough of it, get a second opinion - a friend, a beta. If there is any doubt about whether your story contains all the characters it needs to contain, please check with mods. Prompts alone are not automatically permission to leave characters out. The use of additional tags may still leave some grey areas.

  • Please review your author's notes. Yuletide stories are anonymous for one week - do not give your name or link to your personal sites or socials in your author's note. Do not promise expanded, future, or replacement gifts - your work needs to stand alone. And do not apologise for your work in your author's note, or talk about what a struggle it was to write. People often feel doubt as well as excitement when giving someone a story, but don't give your recipient your doubts as part of their gift. In your author's note, please follow the principle that if you cannot say something positive, don't say anything at all.

  • Please check your recipient's Do-Not-Wants. Yes, again.

  • Please check your story in general! You don't have to get it beta read, but please check spelling and grammar. Please make sure that it’s not a wall of text with no spacing between paragraphs - and, conversely, that there aren’t too many blank lines between paragraphs.

(And, having fully prepared for reveals - we hope that you are excited for them! We are!)

Miscellaneous
  • If you're unlikely to be able to comment until the end of the anon period or later, consider letting your author know at the AFK post.
  • You can find beta volunteers at this post or at the Discord server.

Horses at night

igenlode: The pirate sloop 'Horizon' from "Treasures of the Indies" (Default)
[personal profile] igenlode posting in [community profile] little_details
If my characters have made camp in a wood for the night while travelling on horseback, what will the horses be doing?

I was sort of picturing them standing dozing together under a tree somewhere nearby -- possibly tied, possibly hobbled, possibly just being a herd together -- but poking around on the Internet suggests that if not shut up in a stable horses are actually quite active by night. (Which messes with the story, as quite apart from anything else nobody is going to be able to hear anything while keeping watch if the horses are busy foraging around!)

- brought cookies, did not win a prize in the food contest but people seemed to like them, and now I get to eat the less-pretty ones that I left at home
- another American student brought peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which is hilarious considering how much the school talked up the food contest, but apparently PB&J is not done here and people were actually curious to try it
- the sangria that was labeled as "sin alcohol" was not in fact without alcohol, but I drank some anyway and it wasn't bad
- danced around to a wide variety of music
- the Macarena was played and people danced but not the Actual Macarena Dance? IDK.
- a classmate asked me for help figuring out how to use the microwave, and I did not Figure Out how to use the microwave (just pressed random buttons until it turned on) but I did avert aluminum-foil-in-the-microwave disaster so that's my good deed for the day
