Reccer's Notes: This stems from the pseudonyms Ilya and Shane use over the years to text each other (Lily and Jane). The Montreal WAGs (Wives & Girlfriends) grouptext realizes that Shane's "girl", Lily, hasn't been added, partly as Lily is based in Boston not Montreal. So Ilya gets added to the grouptext and (of course) fits right in. The fic's probably more enjoyable and easier to figure out if you know canon, and I also found I picked up more of the humor and details on a second reading. It's an amusing fic, but also about (largely) female support systems, and shows that NHL partners are not unlike military wives. Very well done. Reccer's Notes: Time to emerge from my Heated Rivalry obsession, with... Heated Rivalry recs! This goes au after the book (after season 1 of the show), so I guess it's a little spoilery if you haven't read the book or seen season 1. The plot takes a very different turn at the 2018 Korean Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. It's told from Ilya's point of view after what initially seems an utter disaster following which he has to flee the Russian authorities. Although it starts with trauma, most of the story is about how Ilya's life is rebuilt, with Shane being central to that, as are his teammates, and Shane's parents. It's an engaging story with great characterization and fun banter between Ilya and Shane, Ilya often being his usual in-your-face, snarky self. A heartwarming story with plenty of comfort to offset the initial hurt.

Who put a full-sized CT scanner on a cruise ship? Not to mention the HGTV feature wall of unlabeled medication in glass bottles (on a boat. With waves.) or the gene sequencer. Even the usual equipment is oddly gold and sleek. They have to be custom-ordered, or medical design is very different in our world.

I read that prompt, laughed, and immediately grabbed the pinch-hit. "Privileges of the Purse" is my best crack at the first three questions.

(The final question is unaddressed in the story, but I assert there is a medical supplier out there who does fake-gold-plated medical equipment for a few select customers overly invested in faux-opulence; chief among them is the Trump Organization.)

Cryptic Crossword

A splenic (but not asplenic!) cryptic criss-cross.

Just after I finished my Temeraire story, a second pinch-hit came up for StableState. After I confirmed with the mods that my "excess" 600 words from the first pinch-hit could be applied to this one, I picked it up. After all, there had been a second prompt of theirs that had interested me: one for a music video about spleens.

Fic In A Box has options for non-traditional fills: in addition to stories and art, it's possible to create works that fit various format or media opt-ins, one of which is cryptic crosswords. Which StableState had opted into for the spleen prompt! And what a lucky coincidence, I had just that week downloaded a course on how to do cryptic crosswords! I had read the first three chapters! Surely that was enough knowledge to design my own cryptic crossword??

So I sailed in and did my best. It was fun! My grid was sub-standard (and I need to figure out how it is that people make up good grids), but it was neat to try to make up clues.

Happily, I had the wisdom to ask

seekingferret, who is well-versed in all things puzzles, to beta. He warned me off the worst of my errors, kindly informed me that what I had created is called a criss-cross and not a crossword, and confirmed that it was in fact solvable.

(I am... not sure that anyone has solved it who isn't Ferret? But the recip left a nice thank you, and I shall be content with that.)

Summer Longacre was still trying to wring the water out of her hair after her fifteen-minute shower, when the distinctive z-z-z-zziiip echoed through the front door. She peered through the peephole at the broad concrete landing where snow and ice clung to the black enameled railing made of common square stock. The winter breeze pushed through the area so fiercely that no one was allowed to leave outdoor gear next to the entryway.

She looked down, checking her long teal caftan and nodded. Someone rapped on the door just as her fingers brushed the knob, making her jump back. “Right here,” she called through the door. Her breath whistled in the back of her throat.

When I'm depressed I stop eating. That is, I know I need to eat, I'm vaguely hungry, but my stomach is in way too much turmoil to actually enjoy food. So I stop eating.

Yesterday, I had a banana, a coffee, an egg...a strawberry at church supper...I had a couple of mouthfuls of salad when I got home, but it wasn't much. I heated up a slice of pork with plans to eat it, but just wasn't in the space for it so my sister put it away in the fridge.

Had a banana and a coffee this morning, now for lunch a slice of toast, half with smoked salmon, half with the pork I didn't eat last night.

Stayed up too late last night and got a late start this morning, so I am already behind on my plan. But I will try to go to bed earlier tonight and get up earlier tomorrow to get back on track. Unfortunately, there is another planned water shut-off for plumbing repairs from 9 am - 12 pm, so I'll have to make sure to make the coffee required for both the chocolate and the mocha cupcakes ahead of time (it has to be room temp anyway), as well as making sure I have an extra bowl for handwashing.

I did get all the fig cookies made and packed into the cute cookie tins I bought so I'm not always giving away my ziploc containers (they are useful and they changed the shape so I can't get any more of the ones I really like), and the pork buns as well (pics) but I didn't eat dinner until after 7 pm and now the dishwasher is running, so I'm done for the night.

oh, I wanted to note that this year, I bought some fancy holiday/red-and-green sprinkles from KAB for the cookies - normally I just use multicolor nonpareils, but these look kind of festive, I thought. I also got red/green sprinkles for the funfetti cupcakes so I will be very on-theme.

4/5. A novella consisting of linked stories of the slow climate apocalypse in western Canada, focusing on the relationship between humans and trees.

Ah, lovely. I am often skeptical of these more literary speculative projects, but this one is a winner (literally, I picked it up because it won the Le Guin a few years ago and that award is reliably looking at interesting things). A sad elegy strung through with hope, a hard book about hard things, a beautiful book about beautiful things. It’s telling a multi-generational story of the warming world through ecology. The angles here are unexpected – an old man rewilding his abandoned neighborhood, a luthier making the last violin he can make, the surly keeper of a tree cathedral.

Recommended if you like that sort of thing, and can take this book’s occasionally too self-conscious of its symbology-ness.

Bonus farm news: Spent some time cutting off spruce branches that were hanging too low over the gravel road (i e lower than 4.5 meters), as is, alas, my responsibility as land owner. This involved a ladder, a climbing harness and some rope, and a long-handled pruning saw.

ficinabox author reveals have happened! And here is the first of the two stories I wrote.

I wanted to write something set in the later episodes, and

gavilan had asked for smut, so I was brainstorming and rewatching things to find a suitable spot to make it happen. And in episode 31, during the Nightmare Master arc, there's this moment when Shen Wei, chained to the Sky Pillar in Dixing, can feel Zhao Yunlan's energies in turmoil even though Zhao Yunlan is far away in Haixing. So I thought, what if ...? I'd always meant to do something with the Nightmare Master's power anyway, because dream manipulation has so much potential! Also

gavilan said they like angst, and what is angstier than the whole white energy plan? So I had an opportunity for canon divergence with larger impact ... *g*
